One Hadith

It is narrated that Al-Shibli [may Allah have mercy on him] served 400 teachers
and said: "I read 4000 ahadith [traditions] and selected one of them for practice,
because having pondered over it and considered it seriously, I realized that here lay my salvation,
since it embodied the knowledge of the predecessors and those who followed them.
And that tradition was, that the Messenger of Allah [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him]
said to one of his Companions:

"Work for your world according to you position in it.
Work for your Hereafter according to the length of your remaining in it.
Work for Allah the Exalted according to your need of Him and
work of the Fire according to your endurance in it."

-Imam Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali [may Allah be pleased with him]

The Rear Provider

Do not seek sustenance from people. God is the real Provider.

If He wills a certain person to be the means of your livelihood,

do not consider that person to be in control of your destiny.

Have faith and be certain in the knowledge that

your daily bread does not depend upon any mortal,

but upon God who created all.

Quran: Man's Selfishness

Man is by nature unstable; when misfortune touches him he panics
and when good things come his way, he prevents them form reaching others. [Quran: 70: 19-21]

Men's personalities have been permeated with greed [or selfishness]. [Quran: 4: 128]

The successful are those who can be saved from their own selfishness. [Quran: 59:9, 64: 16]

Say [O Muhammad! to these pagans]: If you were to possess the entire treasures of my Lord's mercy and munificence,
you would still sit over them out of fear of spending [on others] and man is, indeed niggardly! [Quran: 17:100]

Two Things: Nothing is Better Than These Two

There are two things that no believer has been given anything better:
a good opinion of God and a good opinion of the servants of God.

Quran: There is a Purpose in Your Creation

Do you think that We have created you purposely and that you will not return to Us?
The True Sovereign is too exalted above that." Quran 23:115

Does man think that he will be left wandering [at his own whim]? Quran 75:36

4 Things Cover All Knowledge

Since I understood four things, I have discarded all other knowledge.
First, that my daily sustenance has already been apportioned to me
and will neither increase nor decrease by my futile efforts, so I strive to increase it no more.
Second, I alone and no one else can atone from my sins, so I devote myself to the Lord.
Third, I know that I will never be able to escape death, which is in our pursuit, so I have prepared myself to meet him.
Fourth, I know that God is observing me; therefore I refrain from doing what I must not do.

Quran: God

Those who have taken friends besides God,
their likeness is that of the spider which takes for itself a house,
but the weakest of all is the spider's house -if only they knew!
Quran 29:41

Do they, then, seek an obedience [or religion] other than that of God,
while it is to Him that everyone [and everything] in the heavens and the earth submits?
Quran 3:83

Did you see the one who has taken his own desire to be his god?
Quran 25:43

Quran: And who other than Him...

And who other than Him responds to the distressed one when he calls on Him and Who removes the evil,
and makes you inheritors of the earth, generations after generations?
Is there, then, a god beside God? Little is that you reflect! (62)

And who other than Him guides you in the darkness of the land and the sea,
and Who sends forth winds heralding His Mercy (rain)?
Is there, then, a god beside God? Far exalted be He above what they associate with Him! (63)

And who other than Him brings forth His creation, and then re-creates it?
And who gives sustenance from the heaven and the earth?
Is there, then, a god beside God? Say [O Muhammad!]: "Bring forth your proofs, if you are truthful." (64)

Quran: Surah 27

Quran: To Whom Quran is Useful

The student must "listen" to what the Quran has to say:

"Who is humble before the unseen and brings with him a heart such that it can respond [when the truth hits it]." (50:33)

"It is a reminder to him who has a heart and surrenders his ears in witnessing." (50:37)

The Hypocrites

What I fear most for my people are the hypocrites, who talk wisely, yet act unjustly.

Listen to your Heart

Listen to your heart and not your ego.

Your ego prompts you to boast of vain assertions to obtain the glory of this world.

Turn away from vanity and seek Him in the recesses of your heart and soul.

The Three Qualities of the Friend of God

The sign of the friend of God is that he has three qualities:

a generosity like that of the ocean,

a compassion like that of the sun,

and a humility like that of the earth.
